How to Get More Testimonials From Customers

While most customer testimonials are bunk, we still rely on them as we ponder making a buying decision. It's difficult to separate those that are fabricated from those that have come from satisfied customers.Business owners all over the world are turning to the Internet as their new avenue for sales, and there's no quicker way to establish credibility than to have people who buy your product say something nice about the experience. If done properly, no advertising you can do is as powerful. Here are ways you can get more testimonials from your customers.

Instructions

Develop a mechanism for requesting and capturing testimonials. If your buyers only come to you occasionally, like many retailers, ask your customers for a kind word as part of your follow-up procedure. It should not be difficult to program a contact after the customer has received your product wherein you briefly ask for a testimonial, either about your service or about the product itself. If, on the other hand, you sell a service or a product that requires ongoing contact with the customer, integrate your request for a testimonial with that ongoing contact.

Be specific in your request. You'll notice that many testimonials say something like “I'd buy from you again,” or “The product was wonderful.” They're fine, but a more specific comment is better. For example, ask the customers why they consider your product or your service so special, or how the price of your product or service compares with those marketed by a competitor.

Ask for testimonials that are short and sweet. Your customers will appreciate your emphasis on short testimonials, which are also easier to write.

    • 4

Make sure your testimonials come from people who are similar to those who buy your product or service. Too often, websites are replete with kind words from people like vendors, other retailers or marketing professionals who have no connection to your average buyer. Also, make sure that you request contact information and their approval to use their names. The more you can make the testimonial come from a real buyer, the more effective it will be.

Be sure to thank the person giving the testimonial. If you are a retailer, simply program an auto-response when a testimonial is received. If your business requires frequent contact, either sent that person a written thank you note, or telephone him/her to show your appreciation. In the future, if anyone calls that person for verification, you are more likely to receive higher marks as a result of your efforts.
