How to Pad a Clothes Hanger

This is an easy method for combining your household recycling efforts with your closet maintenance. Some delicate garments are intended to be hung on special padded hangers, but you can create your own by wrapping them in used but clean disposable pantyhose. They're fast and easy to make, and they'll help you upgrade your closet without any added expense. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Using the point of a pair of scissors, poke a small hole through the crotch area of the pantyhose.

    • 2

Feed the end of the hanger's hook through the hole you created.

    • 3

Grab one leg of the pantyhose and wind it around one side of the hanger. You need to wrap only the top part of the hanger, the part that supports the shoulder of a garment. When you've wrapped the entire side and have used up the entire leg, repeat the process on the other side with the other pantyhose leg.

    • 4

Pull the top part of the pantyhose down over the entire hanger so that the waist opening is at the very bottom of the hanger. The elasticity of the pantyhose fabric and waistband will keep the legs in place on the shoulder sides of the hanger.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you don't wear pantyhose, keep an eye out for sale racks and dollar-store bins of cheap disposable pairs. If you can find them for less than $1 per pair, you'll probably still save quite a bit compared to buying padded hangers.

  • This process will close off the opening through the middle of the hanger, so you will not be able to use it to hang pants.
