Step 1
Check your local library system. Many libraries receive grants and replace their computers frequently. Join your local Friends of the Library group to receive advance notice about any upcoming sales. Many libraries hold pre-sales for members. This is a great way to get your hands on an iMac before the general public. Many libraries sell used iMacs for as little as $35.
-
Step 2
Call your local art school. Many art schools offer programs in graphic arts, and Macs are the gold standard for graphic artists. Because schools pride themselves on offering the most up-to-date information and technology for their graduates, the computers are replaced frequently. The computers at design and art schools may sell for two or three times the cost of an iMac at the library, but most will be newer and will be better maintained.
-
Step 3
Check with your local elementary school. Local school districts often clear out used and unwanted computers by offering them for sale to people living within their districts. Call the technology director or computer instructor to find out the computer replacement policy. Many schools have written policies dictating the maximum time any computer is allowed to remain in the classroom. If you can find this schedule, you will have a jump on others looking to buy a cheap iMac.

Step 4
Contact multimedia or post production companies in your area. These industries also rely on Apple technology and the iMacs are properly maintained by certified technicians. You can get a machine that functions like a new system at a price that is heavily discounted over a new retail iMac.
