Rescuing a pit bull from an animal shelter is one of the cheapest ways to get a good pet.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Phone book or computer with the Internet.
  • Telephone.
  • Car.

    Let's Get Started

  1. Step 1

Buy a book about pit bulls. Every dog breed requires slightly different care and attention. By reading about pit bulls, you can make sure you have the needed supplies and knowledge beforehand.

  2. Step 2

Get your phone book or go on the Internet to look up animal shelters. Pit bulls are usually quite common in shelters. There are two kinds of animal shelters, kill and no kill. If you want to rescue a dog that might otherwise get put down, go to a kill animal shelter (usually city animal shelters are kill). If you don't want to support a kill shelter by rescuing a dog from one, make sure the shelter you look up is no kill. They will usually say whether they are no kill. If not, ask.

  3. Step 3

Visit a shelter. See whether any pit bulls there are right for you and your lifestyle. If you focus on one, ask whether you can take it outside and play with it. Also, ask whether the pit bull has been abused in the past. An abused animal can be very loving but have some problems such as aggression that are difficult to resolve.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bring a leash every time you go to a shelter. You never know if they may have the perfect dog for you.
  • Buy food and supplies ahead of time. It will save a trip to the pet store with the new dog in tow.
  • Make sure your backyard is dog proof. You don't want your new pet running away
  • While pit bulls can be loving companions they can also be aggressive animals. Make sure to properly train your dog not to attack.
  • If your pit bull is prone to attack, keep it in a stress-free environment and away from those it could harm.
