Halter horse competitions are one of the most popular events on the horse show circuit. They evaluate the conformation and structure of the individual horse against the ideal standard for the breed, selecting the most appropriate horse as the winner. Selecting a halter horse prospect can be accomplished with a bit of time and research.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Read over the standard for your breed of choice. While horses all have the same basic structure, each breed is evaluated on different features and qualities. Knowing which of these qualities are correct will help you in selecting your halter horse prospect. Regardless of breed, a halter horse should have a short back, long underline, strong legs and structurally correct hooves.

  2. Step 2

Attend breed shows in your area to see what types of horses are winning. Judges evaluate halter horses on the same qualities, and finding horses that best fit these qualities is vital in selecting your own halter prospect.

  3. Step 3

Study current halter horse bloodlines for your breed. Horses come in a wide variety of shapes and sizes, and recognizing which strains are winning in the halter horse rings will guide you in your search for a halter horse prospect.

  4. Step 4

Contact breeders specializing in the bloodlines that you like. Ask the breeders any questions that you might have about halter showing at this time.

  5. Step 5

Visit all of the breeders that you are interested in. Look at each available prospect in person, as the only sure way to know what type of horse you are getting is to see her hands-on.

  6. Step 6

Halter up each horse and evaluate him in a mock show setting. Ask the horse to walk, trot and to stand squarely, as these are moves the horse will have to do in the ring. This mock show is one of the best ways to see how a horse will react in an actual show ring setting.

  7. Step 7

Ask the breeder if she plans to show the horse in halter. If she does, attend a show with her to see how the horse does in actual competition. Discuss purchase price and arrangements once you have decided on a prospect.

  8. Step 8

Complete any required contracts or paperwork that the seller has to finish the purchase of your halter horse prospect. Follow up with your vet upon purchase to ensure that there are no blemishes or flaws.

Tips & Warnings
  • Choose a horse only after careful consideration. A competitive halter horse can take a good deal of time to find.
  • Do not buy a lame or otherwise unsound horse. Lameness is an issue that can be very difficult to diagnose and treat, and unsound horses can be disqualified from competition.
