How to Pass the Vet Tech National Exam

The vet tech national exam consist of 200 multiple choice questions and lasts 4 hours. The exam covers seven of the most important areas in animal healthcare, including anesthesia, radiography and ultrasound, and surgical preparation. You will only be able to take this exam once you graduate from an accredited school and receive your associate's in applied science. The exam is offered twice a year, so you want to make sure you pass it the first time.

      Read books that cover the subject matter on the exam. Some suggestions include "One Day Review" by Ann Balay and "One Thousand Questions for Technicians" by Chris Mosby.

      Study through lab procedures. "Laboratory Procedures for Veterinary Technicians" by Paul Pratt is one of the best paperbacks to study in order to help you pass the national vet tech exam.

      Contact schools that offer hands-on experience. Citrus Heights and Pleasant Hills in California, as well as Hickey College in Missouri, allow hands-on training with supervision.

      Contact a tutor that may be offered through the school you received your degree at. The tutor can go over possible questions that may be asked of you on the vet tech exam and help you answer them.
