How to Camp at Enchanted Rock

Camping is a fun endeavor anywhere, but camping at Enchanted Rock in Texas is an exceptional experience. It consists of almost 1,644 acres and attracts both local Texans and visitors from all over the world. Biking, hiking and camping are all popular activities at Enchanted Rock, where the focus is on family, fun and the natural beauty that surrounds you.

Instructions

1. Drive to Enchanted Rock. Take Highway 16 for 14 miles south of Fredericksburg, then go west on Ranch Road 965. The address is 16710 Ranch Road 965, Fredericksburg, Texas, 78624. You will find parking, refreshments and a campsite.

2. Plan your visit in advance so that you come during the fall. You'll find trail tours and trail projects are a big draw. The cool weather and beauty of the autumn scenery will ensure that your trip is one to remember. The cooler weather also is more invigorating for serious outdoor recreation.

3. Enjoy a hay ride. If you plan your trip for September or October, check the current calendar for exact date. You and your family can enjoy the old-fashioned magic and charm of a hay ride. While there is no fee to participate in this fun, donations are graciously accepted. You also are given a geological and historical tour of Enchanted Rock. It's the perfect way to experience beauty of the place.

4. Picnic in nature. There are so many places within the boundaries of Enchanted Rock where you can have a picnic. Be prepared with blankets, easily stored food and beverages. You'll be able to sit down and dine at many points along the trails. Be sure to position yourself away from foot traffic areas. You don't want your picnic to be interrupted or be in someone's way.

5. Set up your tent early, if possible. The campgrounds get crowded sometimes and you want time to relax and enjoy one another's company at Enchanted Rock.

6. Star a bonfire in the designated areas if there isn't a fire ban. If there's a fire ban, never start one. You could end up in trouble with the law and paying a hefty fine if you ignore fire bans. These bans are put into place for the safety of all. Respect and understand the rules to be a good camper.

7. Eat at your campsite when possible. This will require careful advanced planning, but it's worth it. Include the favorite snacks for you and your camping partners. This will save time and money as there aren't many eating places nearby.

8. Set aside at least two days for hiking on the majestic Enchanted Rock. The magic that encircles this gorgeous destination is worth savoring.

Tips & Warnings

• Make an alternate plan. Enchanted Rock often closes on weekends and the parking closes sometimes due to full capacity.

• Don't ever go hiking alone. Bring a friend or let others know of your exact whereabouts. Safety comes first.
