You have granny squares crocheted and you have already made an afghan out of the ones you wanted. What will you do with the remaining squares? You will learn how to sew the remaining squares together to make a vest.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Granny squares
  • Yarn
  • Straight darning needle
  • Tape measure
  • Pen or Pencil
  • Paper
  • Crochet hook (same size used for squares)

    Measuring for Your Vest

  1. Step 1

Begin by measuring around the hips just below your waistline. Write the measurement down as well as where you measured from.

  2. Step 2

Measure down the front from the middle of the breast bone to the place you measured your hips. This is where your vest will stop and indent for the shoulder portion.

  3. Step 3

Turn the tape measure towards the center of the shoulder and measure again from the top of the breast bone to the center of the shoulder.

  4. Step 4

Center the tape measure down the middle of your back and measure to the hip area. Then measure from across the back breast. This is the area just beneath the arms all the way across your back.

  5. Step 5

Finally, measure across the underarm. This will be the area for your armhole. Also measure from the underarm to the waist area. Write all measurements down and keep them close to your work area.

  6. Sewing the Vest Together

  7. Step 1

Begin at the bottom of the vest. Sew together enough squares using a whip stitch to measure the same as the hip measurement you took. This is your foundation row. On the foundation row, continue sewing on rows of squares until you get to the measurement you got for under the arm.

  8. Step 2

Start sewing squares to the front of the vest until you get to the measurement you got for the breast bone. Begin indenting one square per row until you get down to one square and continue up the front until you reach the measurement for the shoulder. If you don't indent down to one, that's OK.

  9. Step 3

Move to the back of the vest and begin at the armhole position. Sew on enough squares to meet the measurement you got for the back breast. Indent one on each side and continue to the length of the entire back.

  10. Step 4

Sew the shoulders together. Beginning at the back of the neck, start crocheting single crochets all the way around the vest until you meet back at the back of the neck. Tie the yarn off, pull it through several stitches and cut the yarn. Move to the armhole and repeat the single crochets around the armhole until you meet the starting point. Tie the yarn off, pull it through several stitches and cut it. Your vest is ready for wear.

Tips & Warnings
  • Try to be as accurate as possible when measuring.
  • Begin one front side of the vest and when that side is finished, begin on the other front side before going to the back.
  • Try to keep your trim (single crochets) tight. This will help pull the stitching together.
