How to Box Out For a Rebound in Basketball

  1. Step 1

Race to the spot where you believe the ball will bounce off the rim if the shot is missed. You can't box out if you don't get there first.

  2. Step 2

Separate your legs, hold out your arms and crouch down in preparation to leap. But be ready to move your feet because chances are the ball won't bounce directly over your head.

  3. Step 3
    Go get that ball!

Time your jump to reach the ball at the peak of your leap. That will prevent others from snagging it.

  4. Step 4

Grab the ball with authority! More than one player generally gets her hand on rebounds. But if you're positioned well, you will have the best shot at it. Take that ball and hold it strongly against your body with two hands.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that the ball doesn't always bounce in your direction. Practice rebounding. Allow a friend to put up shots and try to predict where the ball will bounce off the rim and which direction it will travel when it does.
  • Be prepared to take contact. Basketball is a hard contact sport and rebounding is the most physical aspect of the sport.
