The Bear River

Preston, Idaho, is within a few hours of both Salt Lake City and Wyoming’s National Parks. Preston, located near Bear River, offers many rustic adventures for those wishing to escape the summer onslaught to Yellowstone. Located a few miles north of Preston is the Edge of the Woods Cabins, four newly built cabins that have the capabilities of sleeping 6. From this central location, a family can access less visited mountain ranges and hike less congested trails. Nearby, Bear Lake offers excellent water sports, and there are excellent hunting and fishing opportunities in the fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Make reservations early in the spring for cabin rental. Weekends during the summer may be full. Consider fall as an alternative, especially if you're planning to hunt or fish (see Resources below).

    • 2

Fly into Salt Lake City and drive to Preston. From Preston take State Highway 34/36 northeast, continuing on 36 after the highways split. Turn right on North 2100 and follow directional signs.

    • 3

Ask the proprietor to open a cabin for a tour. The cabin has a master bedroom with a flat screen TV. A smaller room in the back contains two bunks and a lavatory room. The toilet is environmentally friendly. There is also a sleeping area in the loft above the master bedroom, accessible by wooden ladder.

Note that there is a central shower area located at the office. Be considerate of other guests as well as the resident proprietors when scheduling shower time.

    • 5

Relax on the front deck of the cabin when settled. There are two Adirondack chairs for viewing sunsets or seeing any passing wildlife. Look for Sandhill cranes in the fields nearby. After pairing for life, they nest along the Bear River valley. Small woodland creatures and deer are plentiful, but don’t expect elk or moose until late fall, if at all; bears are even rarer.

    • 6

Grill burgers at the barbecue area located safely apart from the cabins. A Native-American tepee serves as the dining room. Enjoy the night sky by lighting a campfire. Food stuffs can be purchased nearby in Preston.

    • 7

Ask the proprietor about accessing the Bear River for floating or kayaking. Only the locals will know the best place to enter and exit the river. Bear meanders with a steady current, great for an afternoon of relaxing on a tube.

    • 8

Visit Preston, where many locals embrace Napoleon Dynamite, their fictional hometown hero. Film locations included the tae kwon do studio, the burger joint and the high school (see Resources below).
