You can use any size pill bottle to make an individual sewing kit that you can carry around in a purse, car or backpack, or keep at the office. These little personal sewing kits are great to have on hand in case of a wardrobe emergency, like a lost button, rip or tear. Make a few of them and give them to your kids, or have a class or scout troop make these for themselves or as simple gifts. They are pretty handy to have around, very easy to pack and carry, and a great way to recycle empty pill bottles.

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Empty pill bottle with the lid
  • 3-by-5 inch note card
  • Thread(s)
  • Two sewing needles
  • Two safety pins
  • Spare buttons
  • Small self-adhesive label that will fit on the outside of the pill bottle (optional)
  1. Step 1

Thoroughly wash and dry the empty pill bottle or bottles. Make sure they are dry before you begin to fill them.

  2. Step 2

Cut small rectangular pieces of the 3-by-5 inch note card. These need to be large enough to wrap thread around and small enough to fit inside the pill bottle.

  3. Step 3

Wrap thread firmly around the cut piece of note card. Wrap enough thread to mend a small tear. Repeat this step with a few other colors. If you are making it for yourself, use colors that you wear often. For a general sewing kit, be sure to include basic colors like black, blue, white and red.

  4. Step 4

Put the two sewing needles, safety pins, spare buttons and handmade spools of thread inside the pill bottle, and put the lid on. If you want to, add a label on the outside. Now you have a personal sewing kit that you can carry or pack anywhere.
