Recently doctors have begun using a new medication in the battle against acne. For years spironolactone, an anti-androgen used to block the production of hormones, was found most commonly in oral contraceptives. However, dermatologists discovered that this drug in topical cream form can be useful in blocking the hormones that create acne. If you doctor has prescribed it, here are some steps to help you use topical spironolactone.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Topical spironolactone
  • Soft hand soap
  • Water
  • Towel
  1. Step 1

Thoroughly wash your face and hands with a soft hand soap and water before applying your topical spironolactone. The oils in your face and hands can cause acne that the anti-androgen cannot fight. Use warm water and scrub thoroughly.

  2. Step 2

Dry your face and hands well. You will need a surface that does not have any moisture in order to properly apply the topical cream to your face. Gently pat dry your face and hands using a soft cotton towel. Do not scrub hard, as it may break open previous pimples.

  3. Step 3

Apply a small amount of the topical spironolactone to the palm of one of your hands. Follow the instructions on the back of the medication. It is generally best to use a small dollop of the medicine and reapply more as needed in order not to waste any of the cream.

  4. Step 4

Rub the cream gently onto your face. Focus the topical spironolactone on the parts of your skin that are affected by acne. Rub the cream in a circular motion until it has thoroughly worked itself into the skin and the face no longer feels slick or slippery. Reapply the cream to other areas of the body as needed.

  5. Step 5

Wash your hands very well after you have applied the cream to your skin. While not toxic, topical spironolactone is not meant to be ingested. So removing it from your hands is recommended.
