Step 1
Sit down with your child and discuss what kind of tutoring would benefit him most. Many students like the idea of having a tutor that plays educational games as opposed to filling out worksheets and tests the entire session. If your child is more shy and would rather fill out worksheets, this may be something you'd like to discuss with the tutoring centers you call.
-
Step 2
Call your child's school. , there are many national tutoring centers operate in the New Jersey area, including the Sylvan Learning Center and Tutoring Club. Ask your child's school if they have had success with a specific tutoring company, and for their opinions on more popular tutoring centers such as the Sylvan Learning Center. The Sylvan Learning Center is a large program that focuses on a variety of subjects, including state test prep and SAT/ACT prep classes. It is one of the few centers in the New Jersey area that specializes in test taking as opposed to tackling specific school subjects. The Tutoring Club, on the other hand, has a study skills program. The Tutoring Club believes that learning how to study correctly and efficiently will help students improve in every subject. The Tutoring Club would be a great program for a younger child who is experiencing difficulty in school. There are Sylvan Learning Center locations in East Brunswick, South Plainfield, Martinsville, Hillsborough, Cranford, Freehold, Princeton, Middletown, Trenton and Ringoes, New Jersey. You can find Tutoring Club locations in Cherry Hill, Chester, Brielle, Flemington, Howell, Marlboro, Medford, Montclair, Washington Township and West Windsor, New Jersey.
-
Step 3
Get out your child's school directory and ask her to point out the students who have had tutors. Call their parents and see which tutoring centers they have had experience with and if they would recommend them. Be sure to ask whether the tutoring is home-based or takes place in a learning center building. Although home-based can make your child feel more comfortable during the lesson, it's sometimes more difficult to take a class without a comfortable desk or table and the proper supplies. Although the tutor will bring over worksheets, pencils and pens, it's up to you to provide the proper learning environment for your child. Classes at a learning center building will have the proper facilities already there for your child to use.
-
Step 4
Decide if your child would benefit more from tutoring at home or in a learning center. Club Z, a popular tutoring company in New Jersey, specializes in at-home tutoring, while larger companies, like Tutoring Club, prefer to operate out of their building to maximize on the amount of students each tutor sees per day. Club Z has a wide range of classes from foreign languages to music classes and speech therapy. As opposed to Tutoring Club, which has more of a classroom feel, Club Z will teach beyond what your child is learning in school. If you'd like your child to get a head start on Spanish for the following year, Club Z's at-home foreign language program is an excellent choice. There are Club Z locations in Oaklyn, Wall Township, New Brunswick, Mullica Hill, Belle Mead, Flemington, Teaneck, Marlboro, Glassboro, Montclair and Tom's River, New Jersey.
-
Step 5
It helps to get online reviews about different tutoring centers in your area. Yelp.com is a website that reviews businesses and has a vast selection of reviews of tutoring centers in the New Jersey area. At Yelp, you can discuss different tutoring centers with other parents online and see how each family rates their tutoring experiences. To start, type "tutoring center" in the search box and type your location in New Jersey to find tutoring centers near you.
-
Step 6
Look in the Yellow Pages under "Tutoring" and call each number listed. Club Z, Tutoring Club, and the Sylvan Learning Center are only jumping-off points to find the right tutor to your child. Talk to someone who works at each center you call to get a feel for how they will teach your child. Be sure to discuss the options with your child and see which center they prefer. The perfect tutoring center will be one that your child wants to attend!
