Not even the best bowlers in the world knock down every pin for strikes more than six or seven frames a game. That means the pros must pick up their spares consistently. There is nothing more frustrating than leaving one or two lonely pins out there. And there is nothing more detrimental to achieving a good score than open frames--those without a strike or spare.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Choose the right ball. Don't use one that is too heavy or too light. Both will prevent you from achieving a consistent release point.

  2. Step 2

Look at the pin or pins before you approach the lane. Then picture them in your mind as you're about to throw the ball and as you release it. You will automatically release the ball toward that spot.

  3. Step 3

Understand that you're not trying for a strike. The pin or pins left over could be in the far right or left corner of the lane. But don't move drastically. Simply extend your arm toward the pin or pins upon your release--no matter where they are. Release the ball from the other side of the alley to get a good angle on the pin.

  4. Step 4

Maintain your composure. If you miss a spare, don't get angry and lose your concentration because that will cause you to miss more spares.

Tips & Warnings
  • Enjoy the game, but do your best. The more you enjoy it, the better you will play if you want to play well. The less you enjoy it, the less you will be able to concentrate and the more your scores will decrease.
