How to Write Faith Based Grants

Writing a grant for a Faith Based organization is not that different from writing a grant for any other type of non-profit. The most important thing to consider when writing a grant for a Faith Based organization is whether this type of organization is eligible for the grant in question. Grant writing formats differ from one funder to another. While some foundations may simply require a letter of intent, others and government agencies may require a proposal or an application. Federal grants now provide more opportunities for faith-based organizations than ever before. In the case of federal grants, the grant application notice, published in the Federal Register, contains all the information necessary to apply, including: selection criteria, competitive priorities, contact information for the program office, and the deadline.Regardless of the type of grant being applied for, it is important to become as familiar as possible with all the vital information before beginning the process of writing the proposal.

Instructions

    • 1

After thoroughly reading the application notice, be sure to have obtained the following vital information: whether your organization is eligible; the award amount per grant; how many projects will be funded; the program contact; the page limit; the deadline; and, how and where to submit the application.

    • 2

Create a timeline according to the time available until the deadline. You should assign 2/3 of the time to planning and 1/3 of the time to writing. Devise a writing plan. Choose the individuals or teams to prepare the different parts of the application: the narrative, the budget, the evaluation methods, as well as, an editor for the entire proposal.

    • 3

Gather information. This is where you will find the internet an invaluable resource. You will need to get information to support the need for the project. The information you gather can also help you design the project. In addition, you will need to have background information on your organization at hand. Getting all the necessary information beforehand will make the actual writing of the proposal easier.

    • 4

The general program information you’ll need to have in your proposal includes: the project design; the timetable for the project; the anticipated results and how program performance will be evaluated; staffing, including biographical information or resumes for existing staff and volunteer needs, if any; and, the budget for the project.

    • 5

Follow the application guidelines to name the sections of your proposal. The information gathered earlier is going to be essential in order to create a compelling case for your project. Be sure to use convincing, succinct and direct language. It is essential to project a sound logic of how the project fits with the mission and vision of your organization. The need that the proposal is addressing must also be well supported.

    • 6

Consider the budget. The budget for the project is an important item that cannot be overlooked. Although preliminary information on costs can be gathered at the information gathering stage, the budget cannot be finalized until the project design is complete. The budget should be projected for the life of the grant. It should include any funds being sought or obtained from other sources and show how the program will maintain itself.

    • 7

Be sure the entire proposal is carefully proofread by several different sets of eyes. Make sure your proposal is complete and all sections are given sufficient care and attention. One carelessly prepared section will cost you points which may make the difference between applying for a grant and actually getting the funds.
