Audiology is one of many important jobs in the medical field. Like most complicated jobs, it takes skills and lots of study. Audiologists handle problems involving hearing or other ear issues patients are having, and give advice on how to treat such problems. An audiologist can work with anyone from birth to the elderly. There are no limitations. With the elderly, audiologists are often the ones to give out hearing aids and fit them to a specific person. In younger children, audiologists may diagnose hearing problems or issues with balance that a child was born with.

Audiologists work in a lot of different areas. An audiologist can work at a hospital, private practice office, university, rehabilitation center, nursing home, clinic or other organization that focuses on good health. Depending on the place of work, an audiologist will perform different functions.

Research is an important job for audiologists who are interested in it. These audiologists don't work with patients but find new ways to help those with hearing loss. Researching audiologists spend most of their days doing studies and writing reports, reporting on new techniques and testing them to see which work best.

Audiologists can work with schoolchildren to test hearing in students who might have hearing loss, or test an entire school for preventative measures. They'll also help the child's parents decide which treatment is best and can work with the school to provide the services these children need. Believe it or not, audiologists also perform counseling for people with hearing loss. Some people may become upset about losing their hearing, and audiologists can help and give advice to these people on how to deal with social situations, school or work given their hearing problems.
