Stock up on spoons. You’ll need to practice and you will need spoons for performances, so you should get lots of them. Don’t spend a lot of money; after all, you’re just going to bend them. Look at garage sales, secondhand stores and other places where you can get cheap flatware.

Come up with your stage patter. You can’t just go up to someone and bend a spoon and walk away; you need to put the spoon bending into a context. This should also fit your personality. If you’re a shy person, your spoon bending presentation can reflect that. Think of the times you’ve seen magicians. A good magician puts the audience in the state of mind where they are willing to believe that magic is real. Think of the unique way you will do the same.

Start handling the spoons. Get comfortable holding the spoons in a number of positions and moving them between your fingers. Practice holding and moving them in a graceful manner.

    • 4

Rub the spoon or talk to it; do whatever magic you are using to convince the audience you are bending the spoon with something beside your hands. You can even have a viewer touch the spoon for you and convince them they are doing it.

Put a noticeable bend in the spoon. There are plenty of ways to do this. First, you can rest the spoon on your pinky finger and thumb, covered by your middle three fingers. Subtly bend the spoon by applying pressure with one of your middle three fingers. Misdirection is important. Make a movement or say something to attract the viewer’s attention from the small movement you make. If your misdirection is strong enough, you can even just put an end of the spoon in each hand and simply bend it as you stand up or adjust your posture.

Reveal the bend in the proper way. This means you’ll have to conceal the bend a little until you are ready. To do this, hold the spoon at a different angle than you did before the bend. The audience will not notice that one of your hands is fifteen degrees higher than it was before. Now that you’ve revealed the bend in your spoon, bask in the glee of having successfully executed a magic trick.
