Step 1
Find the school that is right for you. Hawaii has an "Academy of Performing Arts" and also an "Academy of Film and Television." These would be good starting off schools to get your career on track.
-
Step 2
Plan to live on the island of Oahu. In Hawaiian this is translated as “The Gathering Place” and is the hub for the state in educational, political and cultural venues. Both of these schools are located on this island.
-
Step 3
Be aware that island living is expensive. Housing, groceries, and household goods are at premium prices. This will affect you both in school and later while gaining acting experience.
-
Step 4
Realize that acting opportunities in Hawaii might be limited. While Hawaii is very culturally rich with its many ethnic groups, acting opportunities aren’t usually abundant anywhere. Get a head shot taken by a professional photographer, put together a portfolio and resume, and try sending it around to various agents and production companies. Look in classified ads, community bulletin boards and in industry specific publications to find audition times and requirements. Get there early with everything needed on hand. If you get a contract for a job or an agent, get a decent lawyer who’s on your side to review it before signing.
-
Step 5
Immerse yourself in the craft of acting. Make it an intense learning experience. Find community theaters that need your input and volunteer efforts. Practice acting every day. Go people watching, find out what looks and mannerisms tell you about someone’s character and practice them. Read and analyze everything you can get your hands on in order to understand characterization and story arc.

Step 6
Enjoy Hawaii to its fullest. Surround yourself with the eclectic group of people from diverse backgrounds and immerse yourself in their culture.
