All computers slow down over time as programs and applications leave unnecessary files and data on the hard drive. If not removed, these files eventually become fragmented and cause significant decreases in performance. In addition, unused programs and personal files take up valuable space on the drive, limiting its ability to function at top speed. Computers also fill with dust and debris which shortens the lifespan of the PC. Taking the time to periodically clean and restore your computer will make it run faster and more efficiently.

    Remove Dust and Debris

  1. Step 1

Remove any metal rings, watches or bracelets you are wearing. Shut down the computer and unplug it from the electrical outlet. Unplug the cable that connects your monitor to the computer.

  2. Step 2

Open the case following the directions in your owner's manual. Touch something metal to eliminate static charge.

  3. Step 3

Use the can of compressed air to remove any dust or debris inside the case. Read the manufacturer's directions if necessary. Pay careful attention to vents, fans, heatsinks, memory sticks and inside the sound and video card slots.

  4. Step 4

Replace the cover, attach the monitor cable, plug the computer back in, then restart the computer.

  5. Clean and Optimize the Hard Drive

  6. Step 1

Run a complete scan of the PC with your favorite anti-virus program. Set the program to run every 24 hours. Make sure the virus definitions are updated regularly.

  7. Step 2

Go to "Start" then "My Documents." Delete any personal files, MP3s, photos, videos or text documents you no longer need. If you've saved unnecessary files in other locations, clean them out as well.

  8. Step 3

Go to "Control Panel" then "Add/Remove Programs" to see what software programs are currently installed on your computer. Click "Remove" to uninstall any applications you don't use.

  9. Step 4

Open your Internet browser, click "Tools" then "Clear Private Data." Depending on the browser you use, read the help files to learn more about clearing cached files, cookies and your browsing history.

  10. Step 5

Open "My Computer" then right-click on the "C: Drive." Select "Properties" then "Disk Cleanup." After the scan is complete, click "OK" to delete the files.

  11. Step 6

Close all running programs, including your anti-virus application. Open "My Computer" then right-click on the "C: Drive." Select "Properties" then the "Tools" tab. Click "Defragment Now" to scan and defragment your hard drive.

Tips & Warnings
  • If you find a large ball of dust when you open your computer, use a tissue or paper towel to remove it first before you use the can of compressed air.
  • Do not push or bend any of the components inside the computer. Also, do not touch any of the circuits or fuses on the motherboard unless absolutely necessary.
