How to Deal with Dominating Personalities at Work

Could be you have a great job, but your coworker isn't anyone to write home about. They have a dominating personality which bleeds into your work. Maybe always interrupting you or guilting you into doing work as a favor? Here are some suggestions to survive this negative personality type.

Instructions

    • 1

Talk to the dominator and let them know you don't like being guilted into doing work/being disturbed beyond your requirements and paycheck. This sounds easy, but it is difficult. Have a list and provide examples of their behavior.

    • 2

Identify and control their means of communication. If they call after 5, let it go to voicemail. If they email, allow it not to be read immediately. Control, on your end, how and when they get to interupt by placing tight constraints on your time.

    • 3

Have a back up buddy. This sounds like dating, but dominating personalities have the tendency to make sure the work is done by deligating even while they are out enjoying themselves. Your back up buddy is the reason you can't take on any extra work or even feel guilty. Just call them for an immediate excuse.

    • 4

Talk to the boss. Unless this person is the boss, the need to discuss this type personality is essentially your last hope before finding a new job.

Tips & Warnings

  • Stress in the workplace is bad for your health. If you don't love your job, consider changing your career.
