Things You'll Need:
- Surfboard
- Open water
-
Step 1
Take proper surfing lessons before venturing into the open water to surf.
-
Step 2
Always go surfing with a friend. It is safer to have two people surfing together and watching out for each other in case something happens.
-
Step 3
Pick the surfing location wisely. Always surf in front of a lifeguard on duty. Surf only in water where the waves are appropriate for your surfing ability.
-
Step 4
Perform the stingray shuffle when entering the water to surf. Stingrays are disk-shaped sea creatures that will sting a person if they are touched. When a person enters the water by shuffling his feet, the stingrays will know something is coming and will instinctively move out of the way.
-
Step 5
Keep your distance from other surfers when you are out in the open water waiting for a wave to ride. If there is a group of people who are close together all trying to catch the same wave, this is an accident waiting to happen. People will bump into one another, and there is more of a possibility of getting hurt this way.
-
Step 6
Take responsibility for your own surfboard only. If someone falls off her surfboard when riding a wave, she should pay attention to where the surfboard is. The leash on the surfboard should always be attached to the surfer. Never caddy another person's board or retrieve her surfboard in the water.
-
Step 7
Always respect other surfers' area in the water. If another surfer nabs a wave, never cut in front of him. This can cause a crash of surfers in the water.
