Create a Leathering Effect on a Wall

Using paint mixed with special glazes, you can create the look of wood, marble and even leather. Known for its soothing warmth and comforting softness, a leathering effect is a good choice for those who want to add a soothing feel to a room.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Paint
  • Paint trays
  • Buckets
  • Paint rollers
  • Buckets
  • Glaze
  • Sea sponge
  • Firm paint brush
  • Painter’s tape
  1. Step 1

Choose a bold color to use as a base coat and a more subtle color for a top coat. Take into consideration your furniture and decor, and remember that leather comes in many colors. You don't have to stick with brown.

  2. Step 2

Protect the painting area by placing drop cloths over furniture and floors. Use painter's tape to protect woodwork and window trim, as well as the edges where the ceiling and walls meet. Remove any window treatments that may get in the way of the faux painting.

  3. Step 3

Mix your bold-colored base coat with faux-painting glaze in a bucket, following the glaze manufacturer's directions on proportions. Pour some of the paint/glaze mixture into your paint tray, and roll on the first coat. Apply the paint evenly, using smooth strokes with your roller. Allow the walls to dry completely.

  4. Step 4

Mix your top coat with glaze in a second bucket. Pour the top coat into your paint tray and roll it over the base coat. This time, apply the paint with the roller unevenly, moving the roller in various directions.

  5. Step 5

Dab the area with a sea sponge while the top coat is still wet. You can also use a firm-bristled paint brush to add extra leathering effects. Continue this process over all of the walls until you achieve the look that you want. Allow the walls to dry thoroughly.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't be afraid to choose a vibrant color for your paint base. Once it is combined with the top coat, the effect will be a toned-down version of the original color.
  • Open windows in the room you are painting to improve air circulation and diffuse paint fumes.
  • Clean your trays, buckets, rollers, sea sponge and paintbrush well. This will ensure that they will all be clean and available for future use.
