Make origami dice by folding paper cubes and then adding dots with a felt-tipped marker. To make a paper cube, start with a square of paper, which you can make from a standard sheet of 8 1/2 by 11 inch paper. Simply fold one short edge of the paper over to meet the long edge, forming a triangle, then cut off the excess strip of paper above the triangle. You can also use colored paper if you prefer to have more colorful origami dice. If you make colored origami dice from square origami paper that is only colored on one side, start with the white side of the paper facing up.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Square sheet of paper
  • Felt-tipped marker
  1. Step 1

Fold the square of paper in half diagonally to make a triangle, then unfold it. Fold the square in half diagonally in the opposite direction, then unfold it. The square should now have two creases that form an X.

  2. Step 2

Bring the top of the square down to meet the bottom, so that the sides fold inward along the creases, forming a triangle. Crease the paper.

  3. Step 3

Fold the top layer of each lower corner of the triangle up to meet the top point. The paper will now look like it has a diamond in the center.

  4. Step 4

Fold the two side points of the diamond over to meet the middle. Fold the two small triangles at the top of the diamond down to meet the middle.

  5. Step 5

Flip the paper over and repeat Steps 3 and 4.

  6. Step 6

Blow into the hole at the top of one of the pointed ends of the paper. Continue blowing and fluffing out the paper until it forms a three-dimensional cube.

  7. Step 7

Draw one to six dots on each side of the cube to make an origami die. Use a felt-tipper marker gently so that you don’t crush the cube.

  8. Step 8

Repeat Steps 1 through 7 to make a second die, so that you have a pair of origami dice (optional).

Tips & Warnings
  • If you plan to play games with the origami dice, tape the flaps in place to make them more secure.
  • You can also use this origami cube to make a water bomb.
