Once you know how to do it, dressing to flatter your body type is easy. All it takes are a few easy tips.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

    Pear-shape

  1. Step 1

You want to emphasize your upper half to balance out your lower half.

  2. Step 2

Flared or bootcut pants (not overly so, however) in a solid or subtle pattern, preferable neutrals, work well, as do A-line skirts that flare away from your body. Just above the knee works well. Avoid pants that are too low cut and bottoms that are tight.

  3. Step 3

Up top, you want something with some shape to it--a structured jacket, a well defined-top (especially a moderate V-neck, which will draw attention up) or a fun print. The goal is to draw attention up, towards your face.

  4. Step 4

Add a great necklace to draw attention away from the bottom half of your body as well.

  5. Step 5

Heels look better than flats on almost any occassion, but if you must do a flat, find one with a pointed toe. This will elongate the leg line.

  6. Short

  7. Step 1

Obviously an easy fix is heels--the higher they are, the taller you look. Pointy toes will also help lengthen the leg line.

  8. Step 2

Wear vertical stripes. Not only are they slimming, but they tend to lengthen the body. Avoid any horizontal patterns. You want to draw the eye up and down, not across.

  9. Step 3

Avoid skirts below the knee. Just above the knee is most flattering for short figures.

  10. Step 4

Same with dresses--pick ones that end just above the knee.

  11. Step 5

A low or moderate V-neck will elongate the neck and torso, making you appear taller.

  12. Tall

  13. Step 1

A skirt just below the knee will balance out a taller person.

  14. Step 2

If you are self-conscious about being tall, avoid heels. Wear flats, or shoes with kitten heels, which give the effect of wearing a heel without adding much height.

  15. Step 3

A higher neck (but not turtleneck) will also help balance out a taller figure. Think crewneck or cowlneck shirts.

  16. Step 4

Fitted clothes like structured shirts and jackets, and straight-legged pants will help balance out a tall figure.

  17. Step 5

Horizontal or diagonal patterns on clothes will draw attention across the body, rather than up and down the way vertical stripes do.

  18. Top Heavy

  19. Step 1

Essentially, you want to balance your upper and lower body. If you are top heavy, you want to create more volume on the bottom and minimize the volume up top. The first step for top heavy people is to get a good bra--make sure it lifts and keeps everything in place.

  20. Step 2

A darker silhouette on top will minimize a larger chest. Think dark colors or subtle patterns.

  21. Step 3

A longer, tunic-style top will lengthen the upper body, slimming it.

Tips & Warnings
  • Bright colors or patterns draw attention to an area. Use these on areas you are trying to play up.
  • Darker colors, subtle patterns and neutrals (other than white) play down an area. Use these on "problem" areas. Also, avoid tight clothes on problem areas.
  • A structured jacket is a great addition to nearly any outfit and looks great on all body types.
  • Heels and pointed toes will make your legs look longer and slimmer.
  • Balance--if one article is tight, make the other loose, or vice versa. Balance a short skirt with a turtleneck. A super-low cut shirt can be balanced out with a pair of wideleg pants.
  • Vertical stripes are always taller/more slimming, while horizontal stripes will give you volume.
  • Walking in heels is better exercise than walking in flats, but don't get too high of a heel or you'll have back and foot pain.
