A lot of afghans are crocheted in squares, granny squares to be exact. A granny square is a square that consists of up to 10 rows of stitches. Begin your granny square with the ring in the very center of the square. When you are finished, you can begin your sets of double crochets for your granny squares.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Yarn
  • Crochet hook
  1. Step 1

Make a chain of 4 stitches. Connect the chains to the chain of 4 to the very first stitch made. You should have a circle.

  2. Step 2

Crochet 1 chain and loop inside the middle of the circle you have made. Crochet 12 single crochet stitches inside the circle and connect the last single to the first one you made.

  3. Step 3

Chain 3 and loop over your hook. Insert the hook into the first single crochet made. Pull through and loop over your hook again. You should have 3 strands of yarn on your hook. Loop over and pull through 2 strands. Loop over again and pull through the last 2 strands. This is a double crochet.

  4. Step 4

Crochet 2 double crochets in each of the singles you have made. When you are finished, join the last double to the first double. You now have a ring to begin your granny square.

Tips & Warnings
  • Make sure you count your stitches. Each single stitch is counted as 1 stitch. Each double is counted as 1 stitch.
  • You should have an even number of stitches on each round when you are finished.
