How to Become an X-Ray Technician in PA

X-ray technicians, also known as radiographers, are a vital component of the healthcare profession. X-ray technicians must complete their training through an accredited program at a community college, trade school or university; completion usually does not take more than 48 months, but each course curriculum will vary depending on the training program. Classes will include how to properly utilize the x-ray machinery, how to prepare patients to receive an x-ray, picture processing, x-ray equipment repair and other necessary educational tools.

      Obtain an associate's or bachelor's degree. Some courses you should take are physics, biology, anatomy, medical terminology, chemistry, algebra, medical ethics and computer technology.

      Get certified. Employers in Pennsylvania require x-ray technicians be certified and registered with the ARRT (American Registry of Radiologic Technologists). Upon graduating from an accredited training program and passing the ARRT examination, you will become certified and eligible to register with the ARRT (see Resources below).

      Take a CPR course. The American Heart Association offers CPR courses for healthcare professionals. The CPR course offered through the American Heart Association is 4½ hours long. Once you pass the examination administered by the American Heart Association you will receive your completion card which shows the date your CPR course was completed and the expiration date of the license (see Resources below).

      Get on-the-job experience. Get as much experience as possible by volunteering and working part-time as an intern while in school, if possible. Be sure to read employers' requirements prior to applying to find out if any experience is necessary.
