How to Give a Hairless Cat a Bath

Hairless cats are very odd looking cats. They are also known as Sphynx cats and have a wedge shaped head and large ears. These cats are not actually hairless. They have a very short coat of hair, almost like peach fuzz. Even though Sphynx cats do not have fur like other cats, they do need a bath once a week. If handled correctly, your hairless cat will not give any trouble when getting a bath.

Instructions

    • 1

Have the towel close at hand for when you take your cat out of the water. He will need to be dried immediately, but gently. Hairless cats tend to feel the cold more because of their almost non-existent fur.

    • 2

Run water in your tub or sink. The water should come no higher than your cat’s shoulders. The bath water should be warm.

    • 3

Gently wet your cat with the washcloth.

    • 4

Pour a little bit of cat shampoo on the washcloth and lather your cat. Bathe a hairless cat like you would a baby. Don’t get any soap in her eyes. Rinse.

    • 5

Take him out of the water and quickly wrap a towel around him. It takes just a couple of minutes until he is dry.

Tips & Warnings

  • Cats secret a natural body oil that their fur absorbs. With hairless cats, you have to wipe them down everyday to get rid of the excess oil. It is recommended to use a Chamois cloth for daily rubdowns, as it is very soft. Rubbing your Sphynx cat everyday gets rid of more than just oil, it also gets rid of dander. Just because they don’t have any fur doesn’t mean they don’t have dander.

  • Cleaning their ears after a bath is important. Hairless cat’s ears collect dirt more often than cats with fur, probably because they have no hair or maybe because their ears are larger than the average cat. Whatever the reason, purchase an ear cleaner from your local vet and clean their ears with a cotton swab and ear cleaner.

  • Consider getting your hairless cat a sweater to wear in cool temperatures.

  • Hairless cats should always be brought inside to sleep. This is because there are very sensitive to cold temperatures and need to be kept warm. Because they don’t have thick fur to protect their skin, do not leave these cats alone with other frisky animals. Even in play, they can get scratched and hurt.
