Hamsters are a very popular pet choice among children. If you intend to buy and raise a pet hamster, you will have to learn how to properly handle him to ensure his safety as well as yours. A new hamster may be very leery and nervous about his new surroundings for quite some time, so you must be very careful when bringing a new hamster home.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Gloves
  1. Step 1

Make sure your hamster is awake and alert before reaching in and grabbing him. If you grab your hamster while he's sleeping or eating, he may become very startled and bite you out of fear.

  2. Step 2

Be gentle when you are handling your hamster. Never throw your hamster around or be careless with him.

  3. Step 3

Give the hamster space. Never pick up a hamster who is running from your hand. He is either uncomfortable or doesn't want to be picked up. Picking up a hamster when he's trying to do this may encourage him to bite you. If you have to take the hamster to the vet or transport him anywhere while he's in this mood, use gloves to protect your fingers.

  4. Step 4

Pick your hamster up with a lot of support. Either let him crawl into your hands or gently wrap your hands around his chest and stomach. Never pick up your hamster by his neck or fur.

  5. Step 5

Wash your hands thoroughly after you've put your hamster down.
