How to Become a Sonographer in Tampa
Even when the economy is undergoing difficulties, health care jobs are always in demand. There are many programs in the Tampa, Florida, area to help you train for a career in health care. To become a sonographer, you usually must have the proper certifications and the right education. You can choose between an associate degree or a medical certificate program.

Evaluate your situation. Are you working right now? And if so, how soon would you like to be a sonographer? An associate degree means 2 years of full-time schooling, or even more if you can only attend part-time. There are several places that can get you certified to become a sonographer in less time.

Contact the Tampa Bay Workforce Alliance. The best way to do this is usually by going into the office. Explain to the front desk that you are trying to get educated for a new career and need help. They can point you in the right direction. Depending on your situation, you may qualify for free tuition to some of these schools.

Find out about local schools. Some of the most popular include the Ultimate Medical Academy (UMA), Sanford-Brown Institute and Argosy University. Find out about the kinds of programs they offer, their tuition and available financial aid, as well as completion/job placement rates and what kind of job placement they do. Meet with an adviser in person. Remember that advisers will try to sell you on their school.

Contact the schools that interest you the most. Find out about information sessions and open houses. Attend these as the last step before making your decision.

Choose your school and get working on your application for financial aid. Attend your program, and when finished, take the tests necessary to complete your certifications. The minimum requirement is the Florida State Basic X-Ray Machine Operator license, and the test is written by the Florida Department of Health (see Resources).
