1
Be sure to make an extra set of keys. Many dry cleaners and shoe or luggage repair stores have key making as an additional service.
-
2
Give a family member or a good friend you trust an extra set of keys. Calling them will be a lot cheaper and easier than contacting a locksmith. However, if the spare keys are not an option, you have no choice but to call a locksmith. You want to pick one that is local. But beware: many advertising as locksmiths are not local nor are they properly trained.

Research using the yellow pages and the internet several different locksmiths before you need one. List several locksmiths with their names, addresses and phone numbers. If it’s an emergency situation and you need a locksmith for your car, call roadside assistance service first. They will know a locksmith who they’ve presumably used in the past and had good dealings with. If you’re nearby a gas station, ask for their assistance.

4
Ask the locksmith for an estimate of all work and replacement parts before the locksmith begins the work. Also, inquire about any additional fees before you agree to have the locksmith begin work. For example, some locksmiths might charge extra for coming in the middle of the night or responding immediately. Be sure to find out if there is a mileage charge or minimum fee.
-
5
Be sure to ask if the locksmith is insured because if your property is damaged during repair or the work is not done correctly which then causes damage or loss, the locksmith’s insurance would cover these losses.

Tips & Warnings
If you are pleased with the service, be sure to keep the locksmith’s name and number handy.
Never sign a blank form authorizing work. It must have details of the work to be done and a price. Once the work is finished, be sure to ask for an itemized invoice that covers parts, labor, mileage and the price of the service call.
Never work with a locksmith that only accepts cash.
