How to Get Clients as a Catalog Copywriter

You can get clients as a catalog copywriter and make a living from home writing product descriptions. Catalog copy writing consists of writing short product descriptions for products in catalogs and internet stores. There isn't a lot of publicity for writing this type of copy, but you can build a great income from it. In this field, persistence and ambition can pay off.

Instructions

1. Send samples to prospective clients upon request. Sending samples when not requested may give the client an idea of your writing, but that particular sample may not be what they are looking for. This can put them off and have them believe you are not qualified for their project. Try to send specific samples relevant to what they ask for or to what their products are.

2. Gather the contact information of magazines or websites you would like to write for. Get the name and email or mailing address of the marketing director, copy editor or even the human resources manager.

3. Send the person an email or letter stating your interest in their company, what you do, why they should give you the copy writing project and how you can help them. Don't include samples, but mention that you have some available upon request. Make sure to have your contact information in the letter.

4. Follow-up with anyone who returns your letter or calls you on the phone as soon as possible. A prompt response from you shows you are easy to reach and respect their time.

5. Do a great job for each project you get and ask for referrals from clients. In the future, you may get all or most of your work from referrals.

Tips & Warnings

• Call before sending a letter or email to get the correct name for the person you are contacting. Addressing the wrong person, or writing "To Whom It May Concern" will get your letter thrown away without a second glance.

• Don't send out a mass-produced letter. Take a little time to personalize each letter with that company's information to show you have a real interest in working with them.
