How to Save on Energy Costs

1
Check your insulation. No matter what time of year it is, insulation can greatly aid in the reduction of energy costs. It can trap in cool air in the summer and hot air in the winter. There are a few different types of insulation, such as fiberglass, rock wool, cellulose and a synthetic foam. Fiberglass is the most widely used type and it comes in two types, rolled blankets or bats. Your attic, walls and basement should be the main areas of your house you should ensure are well-insulated.

Let the sunshine in. Instead of turning on lights during the day, draw back the curtains and roll up the window shades. Buy energy-efficient light bulbs instead of regular light bulbs. They may be more expensive, but they last longer than regular light bulbs and use less energy. They also come in a variety of different shapes and sizes.

3
Replace your air filters in your furnace on a regular basis. Dust in your air filters can force your furnace to work overtime, resulting in higher utility bills. Replacing your air filters can also keep the air you breathe cleaner by eliminating some of the dust.

4
Replace your old furnace or air conditioner with a new one. You will save money in the long run. New furnaces and air conditioners are made to save on energy costs. Have your furnace inspected once a year to check for leaks, to make sure the wiring is intact and there is proper ventilation.
-
5
Unplug your appliances when not in use. This does make a difference in overall home energy costs. Depending on the appliance, you could save $100 or more per year by just unplugging it.
-
6
Turn down the thermostat at night during the colder months of the year. Just turn it down a few degrees or whatever temperature you can tolerate. You can also turn it down when you are not at home. Be sure you are not constantly changing the temperature. This wastes energy and can increase your heating costs.

Tips & Warnings
Read the labels on the energy-efficient light bulbs: many are made with mercury and if they are broken, the released mercury is a serious health hazard. Do not allow children to install these kinds of lights.
You may also choose to light areas such as the kitchen while cooking and have an extra smaller table where children can do their homework while parents cook. Using and lighting fewer rooms save energy and lowers these bills.
