Step 1
**Healthy Soup Thickeners**
Replace fattening soup thickeners in your best recipe with healthier versions. Instead of using ingredients like cream, butter, flour, and egg yolks to thicken your soup, try mixing in pureed cooked vegetables instead. Some tasty vegetable choices to add in your best recipe include: potatoes, cauliflower, carrots, and celery. -
Step 2
**Healthy Oils**
The gig is up! Butter and lard have no business being in your kitchen or in your best recipe anymore. Replace those artery-clogging saturated fats with healthier alternatives for your recipes. Oils such as olive, canola, and sunflower will give your recipes less saturated fat content without sacrificing taste. -
Step 3
**Cut Back on Fattening Ingredients**
If you simply must bake a batch of your sinful but oh-so-yummy oatmeal walnut cookies, shave off some fat and calories by using half the walnuts in the recipe. You'll still get the flavor and crunch of the walnuts in every cookie, but now you'll have a healthy recipe. Try this cutting back tip in your best recipe and your waistline will thank you as you lose weight! -
Step 4
**Add Ground Flaxseed**
Stirring a tablespoon or two of ground flaxseed in things like your baked goods and cooking oil will add fiber, lignans, and omega-3 fatty acids. These nutrients work together to help decrease your risk of heart disease. Avoid using flaxseed oil and whole flaxseed in your best recipe. The oil does not contain fiber and the whole flaxseed may pass through your system without being digested (meaning you won't get its beneficial nutrients).
Add ground flaxseed to your cooking oil and cookie recipes. It actually adds a nutty flavor for your best recipe. Be careful not to overdo it with the flaxseed, though; I have noticed that my cookies come out with a slightly spongy texture if I am too liberal with the flaxseed in my healthy recipe.
