Become a Certified Bookkeeper

Becoming a certified bookkeeper can make you more marketable in the job market and help you earn a higher wage. Follow these steps to get affordable bookkeeping training and become a certified bookkeeper.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Go the AIPB.com, which is the website for the American Institute of Professional Bookkeepers.

  2. Step 2

Click on 'Certification' on the left side of the page.

  3. Step 3

You can order a free, 23-page booklet that explains the AIPB certification process.

  4. Step 4

In order to become a certified bookkeeper you will need two years or more of full-time bookkeeping experience, or the part-time or freelance equivalent. You will also need to pass a four part exam.

  5. Step 5

AIPB offers, but does not require, workbooks that will help prepare you for the four parts of the test.

  6. Step 6

When you're ready, you will need to take the certification exam at a Prometric test center. You will earn a passing grade when you score 70%-75% or higher on each part of the test.

  7. Step 7

You will also need to sign a code of ethics in order to become a certified bookkeeper.

  8. Step 8

Once you become a certified bookkeeper through AIPB, you will be eligible to put CB after your name.
