Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you place the Education section of your resume. As a rule of thumb, your education should be closer to the top of your resume if it is your most marketable qualification. For example, if you have minimal professional experience, your education is typically your strongest qualification and you should list it near the top of your resume. If you have more than five years of professional experience, your education is less important than your experience and should be listed near the bottom of your resume.

    • 2

Decide if you should list high school education on your resume. If you are applying for a federal government job or you are sending your resume outside of the US, always include your high school education. If these situations do not apply, only include your high school education if it is the last level of education you have achieved and you have no other training applicable to the job.

    • 3

Include the following details when listing formal education: GPA (if above 3.5), awards, recognitions, scholarships, courses relevant to the job you are seeking, degree/certificate earned.

    • 4

List education in chronological order from most recent to least recent, including beginning and ending dates.

    • 5

Include training, courses, on-the-job training, special projects, etc. that are applicable to the job you are seeking.

Tips & Warnings

  • If your education history is not appealing, consider replacing the Education portion of your resume with an Experience section. In this section, list how you have come to possess the skills necessary for the position. Be creative if you must!

  • Only list training classes, certifications, etc. that are applicable to the position you are seeking.
