How to Fix a Cell Phone After Getting It Wet thumbnail
It is never a good idea to use your cell phone near water.

Imagine dropping your cell phone in the sink while you are washing the dishes, or leaving it in your pant's pocket and accidentally running it through the washing machine. These things do actually happen, and aside from simply not using your cell phone near a water source, you might be able to fix, and use, your phone it once again if you do drop it in water.

Things You'll Need

  • Cloth or paper towel
  • Shop vac or compressed air
  • Bowl or plastic bag
  • Rice

Instructions

    • 1

Extract your phone from the water source immediately and avoid the temptation to turn it on. Leave your cell phone off.

    • 2

Pull out the battery and remove the SIM card if it is easily removable. Do not waste time trying to remove the SIM card if you don't have quick and easy access to it.

    • 3

Dry your cell phone, battery and SIM card with a soft cloth or paper towel, taking care not to damage anything further; just gently blot away as much water as you can.

    • 4

Vacuum up the remaining water if you have a shop vac. If not, grab a can of compressed air and blast away the remaining water.

    • 5

Pour enough rice into a bowl or plastic bag to completely cover the cell phone and its components.

    • 6

Submerge the cell phone, battery and SIM card into the rice.

    • 7

Leave the cell phone and accompanying parts in the rice for a minimum of 10 to 12 hours. If you can leave them in the rice for 24 to 48 hours, all the better.

    • 8

Remove the cell phone, battery and SIM card and vacuum up or blow off the rice dust with the shop vac or compressed air.

    • 9

Put your cell phone back together and charge it.

    • 10

Turn it on to see if it is working.

Tips & Warnings

  • Note: The screen edges of the phone may be faded but this will most likely be the extent of the damages. Your phone should be still completely useable.

  • Never dry your cell phone with any type of heat source, including a hair dryer on a low setting. The heat from these appliances can damage your cell phone's internal components.

I wish I would have known this when my ex set his phone on the bumper of his truck, forgot about it and drove to the car wash. Somehow the phone made it through the car wash without falling off. But it died!
