Things You'll Need:
- shovel
- black mat 3' by 2'
- gallon ice cream bucket
-
Step 1
Find a field with tall grass, preferably close to a source of water. Garter snakes like warm, humid grasslands.
-
Step 2
Choose a nice flat spot, and dig a hole with your shovel. The hole should be a little deeper and as wider as your bucket.
-
Step 3
Next, place your bucket in the hole, fill in around it. This is where the snakes will hide.
-
Step 4
Put your mat on top of the bucket in the ground and make sure the snake can get down there. Garter snakes like having a warm place to hide that is sheltered.
-
Step 5
Come back tomorrow night with another bucket, and come up to the mat as quietly as possible. Lift up the mat and if there are snakes, grab them and place them in the bucket. If there are no snakes, come back the next day.

on 6/6/2009 A pillowcase (with something to use to tie the pillowcase shut) makes a better container to put a snake into than a bucket does. A snake can easily get out of most buckets but there's no solid surface in a pillowcase. The snake will feel safer in the dark enclosure of the pillowcase too.
