Step 1
If you have single pane windows in your existing home that you want to make more energy efficient, either use storm windows in conjunction, or replace them entirely with double pane windows. Double pane windows are today’s standard because they offer more energy efficiency.
-
Step 2
What is the difference between single and double pane? Single pane simply means that there is only one piece of glass comprising the window. Double pane means that there are two pieces of glass with an insulating layer of air separating the two. There are also triple pane windows; but, in the case of windows, more does not necessarily mean better. Triple pane windows are not only more susceptible to seal failure but are more expensive; you may never be able to justify that expense during the lifetime of your ownership of those windows.

Step 3
In both double and triple pane windows, air is used as an insulator. That is what keeps the cold air out and the warm air in. Many companies promote argonne gas as being superior over air, but it is more expensive than air and not necessarily cost effective.

Step 4
If you cannot afford new windows, consider jam liners and sash; that gives you a new window utilizing your old frame. It’s an inexpensive alternative for double hung windows (the kind that raise up and down), and a good solution for keeping your historic status if you have a historic home.
