Things You'll Need:
- Money or Casino Chips
- Identification
-
Step 1
If this is a casino that you plan to visit on a regular basis, sign up for a players card. You will likely see signs all around the casino advertising them, but if you don't, ask the brush in the poker room where to sign up. The brush is the person that takes your name for the games.
-
Step 2
When you arrive to the poker room, there should be a board listing the different games that the room is offering. Most casinos have an electronic board, some don't. If they do not, just go up to the brush and ask what games are being spread at present.
-
Step 3
Ask the brush whether chips are to be purchased at the window or at the table. If they are to be purchased at the window, go and buy your chips before you take your seat. If your seat is open immediately, put a place holder in your seat, such as your players card or card cap.
-
Step 4
When you sit down, start observing other players at the table, or at least act like you are. If the casino requires you to post to enter a game, the dealer will ask you if you want to play and then tell you to post the big blind. Otherwise they will just deal to you.
-
Step 5
Pay attention to where the dealer button is. The two positions to the left of the button are the blinds and you will want to know when it's your turn. Nothing spells NEWBIE more than a person just sitting around checking out the scenery and not posting their blind. This slows up the game and annoys other players.
-
Step 6
If you do not know how to riffle chips, don't try. While riffling chips looks cool, sitting there trying to riffle chips screams beginner.
-
Step 7
Try and consistently memorize your cards. Players can pick up tells when you are constantly looking at your cards. For example, if the board comes with two or three of one suit and you look at your cards, that tells players you are checking to see if you have that suit. When you memorize your cards, you do not give off this type of information.
-
Step 8
Tip your dealer when you win a hand. The only time you can skip this is if you get a walk in the blind, take a pot of 2 big bets or less, or you chop the pot in the blinds. Otherwise, when you don't tip you look like a cheapskate.
-
Step 9
Be courteous to all the dealers and floor staff. If you are the outgoing type, try and get to know them. This doesn't really do anything to help your image at the table with the other players, but it goes a long way with the people that work at the casino. I have seen times where people have gotten a favorable ruling or special favors based on the way they treated people that work at the casino. You can attract more bees with honey.
-
Step 10
Keep your cool when you take a bad beat. Being able to do this will actually give you an air of experience. People will either think that you are very even keeled, or that you have played so much that you know that its all a part of the game.
-
Step 11
When it is time to show your cards, show them. Do not slowroll. Slowrolling occurs when someone waits to show their hand until the other player shows in an attempt to show them up. It is poor etiquette.
