Work At Home as an Online Tutor
Work At Home as an Online Tutor

Are you interested in becoming an online tutor? There are a number of online tutoring companies that hire teachers. Each one has different requirements. This eHow guide will give you a general overview of what to expect and how to get hired.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Teaching Certificate and/or College Degree
  • Hands free headset and telephone
  • Computer
  1. Step 1

Most tutoring companies require a teaching certificate. Some allow for an expired certificate as long as it expired naturally and was not revoked by the issuing state. Some companies do not require a teaching certificate but do require a college degree. Check out each online tutoring company to see if you meet the requirements.

  2. Step 2

Some companies that hire online tutors include eHill.org, Berlitz.us, esylvan.com, brainfuse.com, tutor.com and kidspan.com. A google search will pull up dozens of others. Check each ones requirements to see if you are a fit.

  3. Step 3

At many online tutor companies you will be hired as an employee with limited benefit options, 401K plans, discounts on products etc. The company will send you your paycheck. Other companies require that you collect your tutoring fees directly from the student and in some cases negotiate your fees.

  4. Step 4

Some companies require you pass tests on the different subject areas you want to tutor in. You may be contacted for a telephone interview. During the interview you may be given role playing situations and problem solving skills questions.

  5. Step 5

You will be required to have a hands free headset and noise free environment. Some online tutoring companies will provide you with the headset, others require you provide your own. See my eHow article on "How to Select a Headset for a Work At Home Call Center Job" for tips.

  6. Step 6

Once you are offered the job you will usually have paperwork to complete. You may have to get documents notarized and you may have to get fingerprinted. Be prepared to wait some time after being told you are hired to actually start your job as a Work At Home Online Tutor.
    Good luck!

Tips & Warnings
  • Payment for tutors varies ranging from $8 to $25 for very select subjects. The majority of online tutoring companies pay around $10 an hour.
  • If benefits are offered they tend to be very limited and you will likely have a waiting period before you are eligible.
