Thrash Metal is an extremely important part in the history of Heavy Metal. Created in the early 1980's by bands like Metallica and Slayer, it combined the evil Venom, the free-for-all attitude and technical chops of Motorhead with the intensity and power of the Hardcore Punk scene, which had just started at the time. Full of rage, intensity and musicianship, Thrash would eventually directly inspire numerous other metal genres, such as Death and Black Metal. Thrash has gained quite a following and the most intense fans of the genre go by one name: Thrashers...

Instructions
  1. Step 1

First, if you want to be Thrash, you must be committed. Don't do it because you think it will make you look cool or you can expect to be called a poser and/or be beaten up. Sorry, but true fans take their music seriously. Start off listening to some old, classic Thrash (Slayer's "Hell Awaits", Megadeth's "Killing Is My Busniess" and Metallica's "Kill em' All" come to mind...). If you like what you hear, move on to some other bands, such as those from Germany (Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, etc...), the Bay Area (Exodus, Forbidden, Testament, Vio-Lence, Etc...) or wherever you find them. You might also want to then listen to some Crossover Thrash groups like D.R.I. (Dirty Rotten Imbeciles) and Cryptic Slaughter or even to Thrash/Death Metal bands like Pestilence and Sepultura. From there, you should probably branch out and listen to Death Metal, Black Metal, NWOBHM or even Hardcore Punk (you'll be hard-pressed to find an old-school Thrash band who dosen't listen to a healthy dose of Punk). Once you start hearing "Metal Militia" and "Pleasure to Kill" in your sleep, you might want to take it a step further: the uniform.

  2. Step 2

Now, when it comes to dressing Thrash, let me be the first to tell you that there is no definitive setlist on what you must wear. This is just a usual Thrashers wardrobe, but by no means does it mean you have to go by all, if any, of it. Lets start at the top and work our way down. First, and foremost, is the hair. While not always necessary, a metalhead’s hair is usually his most prized possession and must be kept in its natural color. Some Thrashers also like to wear trucker caps with a flipped-up bill, often with a band or town written on it. As for shirts, band shirts are a must, be they metal or punk. It is also a good idea to have some plain sleeveless, 3-quarter sleeve and/or t-shirts. Besides from that, most shirts will do, be they of your favorite sports team or beer. A good leather biker jacket is a must as well, as well as a demin vest with patches of your favorite bands. This is often worn over your leather jacket. A good pair of jeans is also essential. Most Thrashers wear tight or straight-legged jeans, but a regular fitting ones work good too (just stay away from excessively baggy ones). The most common colors are regular blue or black, just so long as they aren’t highlighter colored. A very popular piece to add to this is a bullet belt, which are available online. Lastly, but certainly not least, is a pair of white old-school, high-topped basketball shoes, such as Reebok, Adidas or Nike. A Thrasher usually tucks his jeans into them. It’s okay for them to have a little color, such as black or red, but try to stay away from overly bright colors.

  3. Step 3

Pick up a Guitar, Bass, Drums, learn to play, and start a band. Learn how to actually play (this isn't punk) and thrash your brains out.

Tips & Warnings
  • Just enjoy yourself. That's what Thrash is all about.
  • Many Thrashers listen to all types of Metal, including the NWOBHM, Death Metal, Black Metal, etc...
  • Listen to other types of music like Reggae, Classical, Jazz, Rock, etc... This will make you more respected by others, keep you open-minded and will keep you from being an ignorant, stuck-up poser.
  • If you have a band, listening to and playing other types of music, especially Jazz and Classical, will keep your music sounding fresh and keep your musical chops at a higher level.
  • Some people don't get Thrash. That's okay. Thrash was created to be enjoyed by us chosen few, which makes it al the more special.
  • Don't get offended by what people say.
  • There has recently been a recergance in Thrash with bands like Bonded by Blood and Fueled by Fire. Don't expect these bands to last. They are just rehashing Exodus. The only band to look out for is Warbringer because they're orginal, creative and fresh.
