How to Deal With Nausea During Pregnancy

How to Deal With Nausea During Pregnancy thumbnail
Nausea can last an entire pregnancy.

Pregnancy is a beautiful thing, but for some women, nausea interferes with the experience. For many women, the term "morning sickness" doesn't apply as they feel sick throughout the day or later in the afternoon. Nausea can interfere with your eating habits, which actually makes your nausea worse. While nausea typically subsides by the second trimester, some women deal with this discomfort for the full nine months. Use these tips to help you manage nausea while your pregnant.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Eat smaller portions more often to help keep nausea away. High-protein foods, such as nuts, beef jerky or string cheese help keep nausea at bay, though some women crave carbohydrates.

    • 2

Eat some crackers before you get out of bed in the mornings. Keep them at your bedside. The crackers will help maintain your blood sugar level, minimizing nausea when you first wake up.

    • 3

Use ginger to treat your nausea. Drink ginger ale -- though look for ales that use real ginger -- or grate ginger into hot water for ginger tea.

    • 4

Wear motion sickness wrist bands. These bands press into pressure points on your wrists, helping alleviate some of your nausea.

    • 5

Take your prenatal vitamins at night if they exacerbate your symptoms. In addition, let your doctor know, so that she can prescribe another brand, if necessary.

    • 6

Avoid smells that trigger nausea. Even the simplest thing, such as a specific brand of toothpaste, can bring on nausea. The perfume that you loved so much may suddenly smell horrible to you. If this is happening to you, stop using your perfume until you can tolerate the scent.

Tips & Warnings

  • Eat snacks that are high in protein and carbohydrate.

  • When you are getting out of bed, in the mornings, do it slowly.

  • Don't keep your stomach empty, this will bring on nausea.

Good tips! Pregnancy nausea is miserable, but it CAN be managed. I had horrible nausea during my last pregnancy, and learned to ALWAYS keep something in my stomach, to eat 30 minutes before getting out of bed, and other tips I wrote about in a similar article. Great minds think alike!
