One of the basic cornerestones of first aid is being able to control bleeding in the event of an accident. Would you know how to do it?

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Sterile bandages
  • sterile gloves
  1. Step 1

Before you begin to treat the patient, put on sterile latex gloves to protect yourself from blood borne pathogens

  2. Step 2

Apply direct pressure with bandage and if possible, raise the wounded area to the level above the heart. If necessary, have patient lie down and elevate feet. Watch for signs and symptoms of shock.

  3. Step 3

Call 911 or transport to nearest aid station or hospital.

  4. Step 4

If bandages become saturated with blood, replace with new bandages. If bleeding has not subsided, apply pressure to pressure point.

Tips & Warnings
  • When you put on sterile latex gloves, for maximum protection it is best to "double glove", or layer two gloves on each hand
  • Apply a tourniquet only as a last resort. If you apply a tourniquet, you are committing that person to the loss of that limb. But, if it is necessary for life preservation, then do it.
