GIS Day occurs annually on the third Wednesday in November and coincides with Geography Awareness Week, which occurs each year during the third week in November. GIS Day provides an international forum for users of geographic information systems (GIS) technology to demonstrate real-world applications that are making a difference in our society. At least 80 countries typically participate in holding local events such as corporate, university, and geography department open houses, hands-on workshops, community expos, school assemblies, and more. This article will show you how to observe, celebrate, and take part in GIS Day activities.

Things You'll Need:

  • An interest in GIS and Geography
  1. Step 1

Anyone can participate in a GIS Day event. From showing a few coworkers what GIS does in your own organization to citywide school presentations at both the secondary and college/university level, everyone can host a GIS Day event.

  2. Step 2

If you are part of a geography department or other organization that uses geographic information system technology, you might consider holding an open house to showcase your facility, work, and geographic information systems technology and applications to the larger community as a whole.

  3. Step 3

Set up a map gallery in your place of work or local organization meeting place to showcase many of the cartographic and other applications of GIS.

  4. Step 4

Deliver a guest presentation or demonstration of GIS technology in a local K-12 (secondary) or college class or school setting. Find a way to make the presentation interactive for the audience.

  5. Step 5

Submit information about GIS Day activities and Geography Awareness Week activities to local media outlets. Local media frequently report on upcoming local events and happenings in the community.

Tips & Warnings
  • Remember that one of the primary goals of GIS day is to "educate children and adults about how geography and geographic information system (GIS) technology make a difference in their lives while highlighting your company or organization's GIS contributions to the community."
