Starting a nonprofit organization takes some time. It is important that the proper steps are taken to ensure the organizations credibility. You have to have a clear understanding about what is needed and how much accountability there is when running a nonprofit organization. Ten steps need to be taken to set up an organization of this type. The first step is the most important step before anything else can be done. The nonprofit organization has to be run according to state laws.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Federal ID Number
  • Certificate of incorporation
  • Office Space
  • Staff
  • Planning
  1. Step 1

Fill out the application for incorporation. This step has to be done before any other steps are taken.

  2. Step 2

Decide on a board of directors. These people will oversee the nonprofit organization and meet monthly or bi monthly to discuss any issues regarding the organization.

  3. Step 3

Plan the mission and vision statement for the organization. This will be what the organization is going to do and will list how they will do it.

  4. Step 4

Write out the bylaws of the organization. There should also be policies for the board members. The bylaws will detail what can be done and not done by the organization. The policies for the board members will detail what they can and cannot do or say.

  5. Step 5

File for the federal ID number with the government. File for tax exempt status at the same time. After the organization has the Federal ID number, a checking account can be opened

  6. Step 6

Read the regulations concerning nonprofit organization for both local and state laws. It is important that all the laws and regulations be followed correctly.

  7. Step 7

Look for office space and buy the necessary equipment. The office will only have to be large enough for staff members.

  8. Step 8

Hire staff members and make a manual that every person will have to follow to be involved in the nonprofit organization.

  9. Step 9

Set up a payroll system and apply for any insurance that will be needed to conduct business for the organization.

  10. Step 10

Plan a meeting to develop the fundraising events. Detail how the organization will raise funds for the nonprofit organization. It is important to have a plan for at least a year in advance.

Tips & Warnings
  • This takes months of work before operating.
  • Always keep accurate records of all money that comes into the organization.
  • Never use the money for anything that is not for the nonprofit organization.
