Help Your Kids Fit In at a New School
Help Your Kids Fit In at a New School

It can be very hard for a child to enter a new school. They may be afraid they will not make friends or that the teachers will not like them. There are some things that will help ease the transition. I have listed a few ideas below.

Difficulty: Moderate
Instructions
  1. Step 1

Make sure you introduce yourself and your child to the teacher/s.

  2. Step 2

Encourage your child to make friends and invite them over.

  3. Step 3

Go to the student orientation. It is a good place to meet other parents, share your concerns with the teacher, and help your child meet friends.

  4. Step 4

Encourage your child to join a team or club that interests them.

  5. Step 5

Have a conversation with your child about their fears. Help them understand that everyone is nervous and wants to fit in.

  6. Step 6

Make sure they stay organized so they can keep up with the work.

  7. Step 7

Stay in constant communication with your child's teachers and administrators through email and teacher/parent conferences.

  8. Step 8

Let them know that if they get picked on a little, it is expected. Tell them to try to use humor to diffuse a tight situation. Help them learn a few jokes.

  9. Step 9

Let them be who they are. Allow them to wear their hair or clothes in a way that will allow them to fit in.

  10. Step 10

See if the teacher will allow your child to bring cookies or treats for special occasions. This usually helps with popularity.

  11. Step 11

Be understanding. They may need to talk to you at home if there are problems with being teased or bullying.

  12. Step 12

Step in when you have to. If there is continuous teasing it can be very harmful to the self esteem. Do not hesitate to talk to administration.
