Do you have old paneling that really would be tough to remove? Would you rather paint it instead of taking the time to remove it?! Painted paneling will brighten up any room, but how do you go about painting it? Easily! I can help you on how to make sure your dreary paneling comes alive.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • A good quality primer
  • A good quality paintbrush
  • Your favorite color paint
  1. Step 1

First you want to make sure the paneling is clean from any dust, cobwebs, or tape. Make sure it is smooth. Wipe it down with a warm damp cloth. Just make sure it's not "dirty" cause the primer won't stick to it.

  2. Step 2

Prepare the place to paint. If you need to cover the carpet, or any furniture in the room do it. You can use an old sheet, drop cloth, etc. You want to make sure that you don't ruin your floors or furniture.

  3. Step 3

Next your going to open up the primer and start to paint. I used different types of rollers and I'd have to say an economy roller, or a sponge roller, both worked well. You want to do two coats of primer, if after you do the first coat you can see a dark area coming through. You want the primer to look "white" especially if your paint is going to be a light color. Usually two coats of primer is less expensive then two or three coats of paint.

  4. Step 4

Once the entire room is dry from the primer, you can start the paint. First your going to want to get the grooves with a paintbrush. Paint each groove with your paint color and make sure you get the entire groove. Then you can use a roller to put the rest or the paint on the walls. Paint like you would paint any other room.

  5. Step 5

Don't forget the trim. A nice bright white of semi-gloss paint always makes a room look complete.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't worry about the grooves until your ready to use your paint color. Otherwise you will have to hit the same area twice.
  • Satin looks nice over paneling, but you can probably get away with any kind of paint because most paneling is smooth.
  • Don't skimp on the type of primer, it's the most important step to painting paneling.
  • Don't use a large fluff roller, it goes on too thick and they are made for rough surfaces anyway. Paneling is very smooth.
