Train Your Puppy/Dog to Sit

Puppies are so fun! They can easily be trained with lots of patience and rewards! Teaching your puppy to 'sit' is the first step in obedience training.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Puppy
  • Leash (optional)
  • Dog Treats (small)
  1. Step 1

Take your puppy to a location that is quiet and secluded from distractions. Use a leash if you are outside in an area that is not fenced in.

  2. Step 2

Hold a dog treat in your hand, up and away from the puppy, letting the puppy see the treat.

  3. Step 3

Bring the dog treat close to the puppy so he/she can smell it, but don't give it to him/her at this point.

  4. Step 4

Enclose the treat in your hand so the puppy can't get it, and bring it close to the puppies nose, moving the treat straight over the puppies head so the puppies head is pointing straight up.

  5. Step 5

At this point the puppy may backup a little bit, but that's okay. Or, he/she may paw at your had to get the treat, so just pull it away and try it again. Eventually the rear end of the puppy will go down to the floor. When this happens, say the word "sit" and reward the puppy with the treat and a pat on the head.

  6. Step 6

Repeat steps 1 through 5 until eventually the puppy will sit on command without a treat.

Tips & Warnings
  • Always us a positive response.
  • If the puppy paws at your hand, just pull it away and start again.
