Maximize Home Storage Space

Storage space is limited in many homes. Older homes typically have few closets, if any. Small homes have just enough room for their inhabitants, and not much more. In fact, have you ever actually heard someone say, "I have way too much storage space?" Probably not. This article will show you how to maximize storage space in your own home.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • Double rod clothes hanger
  1. Step 1

Select furniture with built in storage space. Coffee tables, entertainment centers, and beds can all come equipped with disguised storage space. If you don't have the money to purchase new furniture, however, purchase short, long, roll away storage containers to go under the bed.

  2. Step 2

Keep your home clutter-free. When you have limited storage space, you must limit the amount of belongings you own. Don't keep old VHS movies, for example. Transfer them to DVD to save a lot of space.

  3. Step 3

Utilize home storage space under the stairs. Under the stairs is an often forgotten location. The sloping ceiling makes it difficult to use for any other purpose. In the basement especially, a walled in storage closet under the stairs is fantastic.

  4. Step 4

Hang a double rod from your clothes closet to maximize closet storage space. There is a lot of room wasted in a closet where only 1 layer of clothing hangs. By double hanging your clothes, you open up more space for storage of other items.

  5. Step 5

Give everything you own a place. When everything has a place, you minimize the amount of things you need to own. For example, if you are always losing your sunglasses, you might end up with 10 different pairs just to always have 1 on hand. If you have a specific place for your sunglasses, however, you will never lose your 1 pair. Therefore, you only need to purchase 1 pair. This minimization frees up extra storage space.

Tips & Warnings
  • Don't think an extra large house, garage, or basement will solve your storage issues. In fact, the more space someone has, the more things they buy to fill it up.
