This article will let you know how to convert M4P files to MP3, WMA or WAV using iTunes. The operation is very easy and all iTunes users should be albe to handle it after checking below simple steps.

Difficulty: Easy
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  • iTunes
  • Computer authorized
  • CD Burner (physical or virtual)
  1. Step 1

In order to play or burn a protected M4P file, you must authorize your computer using Apple iTunes. Go to menu Store > Authorize Computer, and input the username and password for the account that downloaded the file.

  2. Step 2

In iTunes, choose Edit > Preferences > Advanced > Burning, and select your CD burner. If you on't have a physical burner, you can use a virtual burner application name TunePat. Go to http://www.tunepat.com to download this M4P conversion program. After install, you will be able to find a TunePat Virtual CD-RW in iTunes burning setting.

  3. Step 3

Go to iTunes menu File > New Playlist to create a new play list, and add the M4P files you want to convert to this list.

  4. Step 4

If you use TunePat virtual burner, you can press its Settings button to set the output format to MP3, WMA or WAV.

  5. Step 5

Press Burn Disc button in iTunes to start burning. If you use TunePat, this is the final step since that TunePat will perform burning, ripping, and encoding all by itself. And TunePat will show you the converted music files in Windows Explorer once the conversion completes.

  6. Step 6

If you use physical CD burner to implement above operation, you need to use iTunes or other programs to rip this audio CD. Normally, the CD newly burned would be shown in DEVICES setion on the left panel of iTunes. Open iTunes menu Edit > Preferences > Advance > importing, select the encoder you want to perform encoding in Import Using section. Here provides 5 options: AAC, AIFF, Apple Lossless, MP3 and WAV.

  7. Step 7

Select the CD newly created on the left panel of iTunes, press Ctrl+A to select all the tracks, right click on them and select "Convert Selection to ...".

  8. Step 8

After ripping and encoding, find your unprotected music in folder of C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Music\iTunes\iTunes Music

Tips & Warnings
  • Above steps also work for M4B iTunes audio books.
  • If dealing with M4A unprotected iTunes music or other music without DRM, you can select and right click on them, then use "Convert Selection to ..." to convert directly.

on 9/25/2008 Excellent howto! But i opt to choose NoteBurner instead of TunePat, as NoteBurner works fine on both Window & Mac systems.
